As born-again ones from Heaven true believers that practice following Jesus daily, we are resurrected spirit with a soul and at this present time of our existence, we have a temporary physical body.
Listen :
Now understand this : The Lord inhabits our mind and heart—not by His Spirit but by His written Word that is engraved upon our hearts as we read it and hear it spoken by others that exhort and teach us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit—that is as we read it, hear it and also live it.
Again, you should note this : God inhabits our mind and heart by His Word .
( † † † )
† Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they , which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it , and bring forth fruit with patience.
† Hebrews 8:8 ... he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah... 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people. . . (Repeated again at † Heb. 10:16 and from † Jer. 31:33 )
𝕋 he Word of God is to dwell in our minds
The Word of God is to dwell in our minds as a covering over our thoughts—like a shadow cast upon us providing help against both sometimes blinding light and passionate heat of carnal and worldly temptations or —from our former wrong activities trying to engage us again.
𝕋 he Word in our minds and hearts is like
The Word in our minds and hearts is like the welcome shade with a cool gentle breeze on a hot day, which the wings of the Almighty provide over us. But as you’ve heard many times, our minds must be renewed and continually nourished by the Word to provide us its value to our soul.
( † † † )
† Psalm 57:1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. 2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. 3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
† John 17:17 [Jesus prayed for us:] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth [His Word].
† Psalm 138:1 I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. 2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name . [If we do not know His Word we can not know the power of His Name! ] 3 In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.
† Ephesians 4:22 …put off concerning the former conversation (behaviors , lifestyle ) the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
The Lord reminded me recently that for all the good that reading His Word does do for us—that that good is offset or even cancelled-out by what vain or unclean things we allow our eyes to see or watch, what we allow our ears to hear, or our mouth to speak or even our minds to think-on or lustfully imagine.
We absolutely must get far more of the Word into our minds and hearts than we allow of the world’s corrupt influences or —the net result of God’s Word in our minds and hearts is either reduced or totally lost [r emember the Parable of the Sower].
( † † † )
† Psalm 119:104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. 105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
† 2 Corinthians 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds * ;) 5 Casting down imaginations* , and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge* of God, and bringing into captivity every thought* to the obedience of Christ. [* All four of these involve the mind of the believer! ]
𝕋 hese things are about the mind and heart
These things are about the mind and heart but there is the other two parts of our being that have needs and responsibilities if we are genuine followers of Jesus—our spirit and our physical body.
By now (more than most ) you have a better understanding of what the regenerated spirit is, what it needs, and the critical part it plays as it is the very life given to each of us by God.
The Spirit of God dwells there like He did over the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies. It is from our spirit and His written Word that we are to be guided as His children, and to walk in fellowship and service and the praise and worship of God, and often with the help of the body.
( † † † )
† John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
† 1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. . .
† 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
At † 1 Corinthians 3:16 Paul makes no distinction about which parts are the temple of God, while 3 chapters later in chapter 6 he does say that we are to glorify God in our bodies and in our spirits. True Christians have become a temple for God to dwell in and then we are informed that as His temple it includes our body also. So, what’s with that?
We go back to the examples we’ve looked at in the Tabernacle in the Wilderness especially—a humble tent of meeting between God and man. It was made of died goats’ skins and boards, and its tools and furnishings of certain metals, some base metals and some precious in availability and value.
As it was initially erected, first went up the outer walls, then the dividing partitions between the inner court and Holy Place and then between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies, and finally, the ceiling over those two very-sacred-places. Those outer walls all around the entire structure defined the holy areas and supported all that went on inside.
The walls were a separation between the things of life and its often-needed reconciliation by things done on the outside [for the pious ] versus the calmness and peace within the 2nd room sanctuary and innermost holiest place.
Our temporary physical bodies (like the simple structure that made up the Tabernacle in the Wilderness ) contain that which is most precious to God and is to be most precious to us.
To us , we house the very Spirit of the eternal God of Heaven, and to God , our bodies contain an eternally existing creation that He loves so much that He sent His only begotten Son to establish a plan of redemption.
( † † † )
† 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple (Gr. also “fane”: a sacred place dedicated to a deity {where It is worshipped }, a shrine ) of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify (render glory, honor, magnify ) God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
† 1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth (ek-aggelos: [out of + the messenger ] publish, celebrate ) the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God. . .
𝕐 our body & mine are the temples of the Holy Ghost
At † 1 Corinthians 6:19 we are informed that your body and mine are the temples of the Holy Ghost. I see the key to what that is to mean to us is in the verse Paul wrote at verse 20 where he said “You are bought—with a price—therefore glorify God in your body.”
These 2 verses coupled with Peter telling us that we are to “shew forth the praises of Him” who has saved us give us the essential understanding of how we are to live in these bodies of clay that are now temples of the eternal God upon the earth.
We are the true temple of God’s Presence upon the earth until the ultimate revelation and arrival of the full Godhead when all things are renewed of the earth and heavens and the Lord Jesus and our Father God literally come together to the earth at † Revelation 21:3 and † 21:22.
ℍ OW DO WE DO THIS ???
Glorify God in our bodies and shew forth His praises? Let us first define these two words as they apply to our becoming both like Jesus and as temples of God.
Glorify : To elevate through praise, high praise or honor, especially through worship; to exalt. To admire and adore, treat as being most splendid or excellent. (
KJV Gr.: To render glory, honor, to magnify [Heb. To make large or bigger than something or someone, lift up, boast on ] ).
Shew : An old form of the word “show”—but it is more than that. To “shew” is to reveal or make something visible in the context of revealing God’s will or His commandments. It is the action in a physical body in this physical realm of displaying or demonstrating something important through actions as a testament of God’s transformative power. This can at times involve actual divine revelation and manifestation—things involving the direct action of God through the believer. It is God making Himself known by His Presence in His temple (you or me ).
[Scripture’s examples: “Great exploits” and “greater things than these”, laying hands on the sick, Stephen’s preaching, Phillip’s translation to Azotas, the speaking and serving gifts, the 2 witnesses, “they overcame him by the word of their testimony” ]
I hope that you can appreciated that what God is asking of us as His temples are not things too heavy or spiritually deep or hard to do.
Therefore, we should understand that as temples of God, our spirits and our bodies, we “glorify God” and “shew forth praises of Him” through our unfettered praise and worship in alone times and without any shyness before others.
We make God bigger than our problems and bigger than others that mean us harm. We are used by Him to make known His love and awe some power channeled through His temple and displayed as a testament to others.
In a sense, as we live our lives we behave (have our “conversation” ) no differently than the holy angels of God do; we refuse the thoughts to go to the left or the right of holiness even a little, we have no fear under threat and no doubts about God’s Word, we are instant-obedient, we speak His words, we transmit His blessing through our hands, we strengthen the weak and the downhearted, we fight the good fight of faith in the Name that is above all names, and we do so with love and humility before our God in selfless service in this physical world.
These things and many others are done as our human body serves as the temple of the eternal God and lover of men’s souls.
In all this—there is no place for sin or worldly ambition. We live daily lives that, whether anyone sees it or not, we are morally clean, righteous and holy before God; it is Him alone that we are to please and care only about what He thinks of us and not the opinions of men.
In these ways and others, we glorify God and shew forth His praises in our body and from our spirit as Paul and Peter instruct us to.
Our human bodies are not inconsequential to God nor should they be to us. It matters to God that by those we cross paths with day-in and day-out that in some way they sense our peace and a holy and loving Presence that is Emanuel—not only God with us but God within us.
Let us be whole temples containing both the Word in our minds and hearts and the living Savior and His Father revealing themselves from their human temple (see † John 14:23 below )! Practice these things until you get it everyday-right to the pleasure and the glory of God.
( † † † )
† Leviticus 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore...for I am the LORD your God.
† John 14:22 [One of His disciples asked Jesus: ] Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode (residence ) with him. [In the born-again one that is God’s temple! ]
† 1 Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation (busyness, behavior ); 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
† 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
† Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind [by His written Word ], that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
