(† Ecclesiastes 12:1) Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home [through death and into eternity], and the mourners go about the streets: 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. . . 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear (moral reverence by His people, or afraid of as sinners) God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

There is an old saying, perhaps you’ve heard it:
“That man (or woman) is so earthly-minded that he is no heavenly good,” or its opposite, which can also be true of someone, “He is so heavenly-minded he is no earthly good.” These thoughts rightfully suggest that there needs to be some degree of balance for every person having to do with this physical life and with what comes next when death happens to the man or woman before it happens.
Most human beings do not realize this or live according to its truth but when we are conceived in the womb, we became a forever-living being, meaning our existence will never come to an end—ever.
In this respect, we are similar to angels that will never die; the holy angels will forever live in God’s realm serving Him with joy, and the Devil and all fallen angels will continue to exist forever but in torment in the Lake of Fire, along with all others that were judged by their life and works to be evil, and cast there also († Rev. 20:10-15).
That being true, why do Christians pay so little mind about what comes after this physical human body dies? And why do we not attend to the needs of our regenerated human spirit as the result of our new birth from Heaven? Why do we not pay attention to the forever-ness of our personal existence but just a part of it—this human life?
Why is this so with so many believers?

Three Reasons At Least:

• We do not read our Holy Bibles or pay much attention to those truly God-called and appointed prophets, preachers and teachers who tell us the truth about this life and what comes after it; many believers either remain blissfully ignorant (“perfectly happy”) about spiritual matters, are too busy in their lives to give attention to spiritual truths, or—simply don’t care—it’s not important to them
• Others have such a hard-core addiction to this world, either by bondage to its demands and ways or so in love with the world and its things, that they have no real interest in what comes after they pass from it—except that they don’t want to go to Hell († Luke 12:4-5, † 1 John 2:15-17 warns us)
• And then there are those that look forward to their inheritance, mansions, rewards, and the treasures that Jesus talked about in Heaven and assume those things will just take care of themselves and be there for them, with them doing nothing that causes those things to be waiting for them when they die; believers presume by misguided faith that simply believing they’ll be there is enough, and don’t know that such wonderful things depend on how we lived our human lives once we were born again (regarding such faith, († James 2:14-26) says otherwise, and I will remind you with more passages that declare that our works, if there are works, do follow us)

No matter the reason we do not consider our future life in eternity, there is no excuse before God for 21st century believers to arrive in Heaven after death and only then discover their presumptuous errors about how they had lived on the earth as Christians.
As Christians, our life as an “everlasting-being” consists of two phases, this physical life in a human body and our next forever existence in the realm of God. As to eternity, this physical life is but A Moment in Time when compared to the infinite forever that awaits us. Here are just three insights from the Word, which the Holy Spirit put in the Word about this life regarding followers of Jesus Christ:

† Revelation 14: [The antichrist has arisen.] 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works (labors [by faith], deeds) do follow them.
† 1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work (labors, deeds) shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
† Revelation 22:12 [Jesus said:]. . .behold, I come quickly (suddenly by surprise); and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work (labors, deeds) shall be. 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

What I hope to convey to you and others that hear this discussion is that the length of this present earthly, physical, and fragile life in a human body is literally a moment of time when compared to eternity. In fact, a “moment” of time when comparing it to this lifetime is too really too long when compared to eternity!

Moment: A brief interval of time (used to be “a fraction of a second” such as a quarter or half a second); an instant. [In the 1980s: Millisecond = 1/1000 of a second,, by the early 2000’s: Microseconds = 1/1,000,000 of a second,, and now: Nanosecond = one billionth of a second.]
Eternal: An infinite duration, without an end, endless, lasting forever.

† John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal (perpetual, for ever) life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting (perpetual, for ever) life.
† John 11:25 Jesus said unto her [Martha], I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
† Romans 2:4 . . . despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil. . . 6:23 For the wages of sin is death [ultimately, the second never-ending death of Rev. 21:8]; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
† Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment (penal infliction, torment): but the righteous into life eternal.
† Mark 9:43 ... if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

All the passages I have referenced or read so far inform us
that there are two things about the business of this life
that we must be sure to take care of:

1. We must turn to Jesus to be forgiven, washed from our sins, stop sinning, and closely follow Him—or eternal life will not be given to us, and
2. Following Jesus includes living daily by an active faith which inspires us to grow in God’s grace, live a life that pleases God († 1 Thess. 4:1, † Rev. 4:11), and endure the permitted or arranged hardships of our lives in order that we are bit-by-bit transformed into a likeness of Jesus!

But (really!) we have very little time for that to happen
(a nanosecond of time compared to eternity) and many
believers today waste nearly every day’s opportunity to
live a life of active faith for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

† John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent (phrase used 15 Xs in the NT). [Set against this revelation is what James said of Christians even in the 1st century:]
† James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. [Do you think there will be any enemies of God in His eternal kingdom???]

I said earlier that “there needs to be some degree of balance for each person having to do with this physical life and what comes next when death happens to the man or woman.”
Of course, our children need to be cared for and go to school, adults need to be productive (God did say, “6 days shalt thou work”); we must pay our bills, and take care of the other businesses of life but it is eternally unwise to let these things take up all our time in light of the biblical consideration about this: In what spiritual condition will we each step from this momentary life into the one that never ends?
In the past I have used the illustration about the fact that this lifetime is so very short when compared to eternity like-as one’s being in the mother’s womb a brief time, being physically born, and having the lifetime of a whole person. In the womb, we are formed and fashioned into a living-being capable of being born alive into the physical world and having all our physical parts, human characteristics and abilities.
But what if—something went wrong in the womb and we did not properly develop into a whole baby? Our life from birth on would be very different; those nine months were to create a perfect human being to be born and live some 70 to 80 years—but something went wrong.
Now let’s spiritualize that: once born again from above, our remaining human life until we die is to be like the short time in the womb, being formed and fashioned as a new creature taking on the image and likeness of Jesus Himself during all our born-again days on the earth. Then, one sad day on earth but a day of great joy and celebration in Heaven, by our physical death we are “delivered” into the realm of our Father God where we begin our eternal life!

Now here’s the point of what I have said today:

Our remaining days here on the earth as Christians is but a moment of time compared to the promised everlasting life. A moment of time but hopefully enough time for God to do a forming and fashioning work if we will both allow and cooperate with Him by the Word (like a mother’s healthy diet during pregnancy) and by His Holy Spirit (the prenatal care of the Doctor involved in our development).
Like the potter with his clay, the Lord with the greatest of skill perfects in-to a son or daughter those characteristic and abilities that will make you and me right at home in His presence to live forever and ever as a whole member of God’s family.
Again, in what spiritual condition will we each step from this momentary life into the one that never ends? Will we be like Jesus? Has our earthly and spiritual labors been the result of our diligent faith in what the Word teaches us, have we been an inspiration to others and glorified God as His servant—or will there be little spiritual progress to show for our life from the time we had been born-again?

I remind believers that the chief question at each of our time before Him is, “What did you do with the life I gave you? How did you live? Let’s see.” Again, read († 1 Corinthians 3:11-15!)

As I have gently tried to impress you with now for a couple years—our spiritual development should be purposefully balanced against the legitimate needs and responsibilities of this present human life, and our spiritual development most certainly should not be easily exchanged for hours of wasted time.
Your most important meal of the day is your personal fellowship with God in His Word and by some prayer time, and your most important activity each week involves the spiritual instruction made available to you as part of our weekend meetings.
If these things are not taken seriously and allowed to develop you as God desires, then your time in the womb that is this-earthly-life will result in a less than the whole person God wants to be birthed into Heaven one day.
We have very little time for God to accomplish who He has "predestined" each of us to be when we arrive in Heaven. Schedule God into your day and into your week—there’s so little time left for Him to do what He wants within you and through you.
