Listen :
Are you having trouble getting the victory over sin in your life? Have you tried and tried to obey the commands of God’s Word and stop your sinning but have failed?
The solution to this problem is found by first understanding the fact that your sinful nature is still alive within you and has not been taken to the cross to die.
(† John 5: ) --
(† 1 John 2:1 ) --
(† 1 Corinthians 15:34 ) --
(† Romans 7:15-25 )
For victory over your sin you must be “all in” by your dedication before God to do all that it requires of you to overcome the sinful tendencies of your flesh. If you will carefully listen to what I will be sharing in these couple weeks or so
and will follow-through with the course of action that I lay out from the Holy Scriptures, you will begin to have victory over your sinful ways.
One more thing to keep in mind ...
One more thing to keep in mind is that becoming born again from above and just being a good person like you might have been before is not
good enough; we are to become holy, which means living a truly clean life before God.
( † † † )
† Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable [see also † Lk. 17:20 , † Heb. 13:17 , † Matt. 25:30 ]; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. . . 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God
† Mark 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is , God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
† 1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification (purity, holiness ), that ye should abstain from fornication (acts of harlotry [spiritual adultery ]): 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour. . .
† James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses [spiritual adultery ], know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Have you ever wondered why Jesus presented Himself to John to be baptized; was it (as John’s general statement at † Mk 1:4 ) “for repentance and the remission of His sins”? Absolutely not —Jesus knew no sin († 2 Cor. 5:21 , † Heb. 4:15 & † 9:28 )! So then why did Jesus insist that John baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan? Let’s look :
( † † † )
† Matthew 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil (make complete, satisfy ) all righteousness (equity, justice ). Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
For the reason Jesus asked to be baptized, please note that it was approved by His Father from heaven (v. 17 ). Yet, I will share the reason that Jesus insisted that He be baptized in water and it is this: It was a dividing line between His former life as the son of Mary and step-father Joseph and His life now to be lived in complete obedience and service to His Father in Heaven.
His water baptism represented His death to the old life (although not one of sin ) and His being raised to His new life—not in Christ but as Christ, the Anointed One sent from God and the Savior of the world. Officially speaking, Jesus went under the water as the son of Mary and a trained carpenter (†Mk 6:3 ) and He came up from the water as the Father’s chief Apostle (†Heb. 3:1 )—One sent forth.
Can you spot the similarities in what Jesus did
Can you spot the similarities in what Jesus did as something that you and I have been commanded to do once we are born again? We, too, are commanded to be baptized in water once we are born again from above; and, like Jesus, we are to close the book on what we used to be and serve in new ness of the life we are given.
We come forth from the waters to fulfill God’s plan to become like Jesus through the sanctification process of the Holy Spirit and the Word, if we will!
( † † † )
† Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection. . .
Now here is where many believers have a spiritual disconnect by not reading the Word and being taught that once we are born again, we are to be baptized in water.
And, many that are baptized in water have neither the understanding of what that means for their lives nor what is expected of them for their remaining days on the earth in order to become free of sin and fully alive in Christ.
In Short the old you is buried in a watery grave
In Short , the old you is buried in a watery grave (like at sea ) and the new you in Christ is resurrected from the water; we are informed of this by passages such as these and many others we may look at later.
( † † † )
† Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death. . . 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection. . .
† 2 Corinthians 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. . . 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ [† Rom. 6:3 “baptized in to Christ ”], he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
† Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Now many believers have been baptized in water because we are commanded in the Scriptures to be († Mk 16:15-16 , † Acts 2:38 ) but most that are think of the act as a religious exercise and not much more, not understanding it is the burying of the old life and the beginning of a brand-new existence.
We are to become more and more like Jesus
But from the new birth on , by our sanctification (being made holy by the work of God’s Spirit and our feeding on the Word ), we are to become more and more like Jesus in character and actions.
( † † † )
† Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19 ...for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. . . 8:29 For whom he did foreknow [You and I ], he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
† 2 Peter 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things [new heavens and earth ], be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
If a believer does not understand these requirements of God, he or she changes very little from who they were to who they are to become.
We are to die to the old self and behave in truth as the new creature we now are.
We are to grow to love God with our whole being and our neighbor as ourselves.
We are to read His Word and obey it and to have a life of prayer and praise of God.
And as we participate in these disciplines and others, we stop sinning as the old sinful nature dies at the cross by our many visitations to it .
The sinful nature is to be both denied and taken to the cross as often as you recognize its influence and there crucified , henceforth allowing the Holy Spirit to put the sinful man or woman you used to be to death by our denying it power over us in those recognized areas.
( † † † )
† Mark 8:34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me [recorded 6x's in the Gospels ]. 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
† Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law [by being a “good ” person ], then Christ is dead in vain.
† Philippians 2:7 But [Jesus ] made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
† Hebrews 5:7 Who [Jesus ] in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. . .
Now if you will admit and confess before God that you still have a problem with sin there is this teaching of the Lord Jesus that reinforces a believer’s need to die to the root-producing seeds of sin and become a new fruitful creation.
( † † † )
† John 12:20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: 21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
† 1 Corinthians 15:35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened (made alive ), except it die. . .
It is made clear in the Holy Scriptures that we are regenerated by our new birth but unless we pursue freedom from the old us the new us is but an early morning dawn where the sun never rises . We must stand up in the Light of Christ and the Word of God and have all things reproved and removed that do not belong in a Christian’s life.
( † † † )
† John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved (shown their fault ). 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
† Ephesians 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
What I am sharing in these lessons on Dying for to Live is for you to know and participate in the steps to freedom from guilt and sin that the whole truth of God’s plan of salvation for us entails.
( † † † )
† John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. . . 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
