(Jun 25 2008) - PORTERVILLE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES RN GRANT :
PRESS RELEASE : Monte Moore - Public Information Officer
The Porterville College Health Careers department announces the receipt of a grant which will enable PC to create an independent RN program.
According to Nursing Careers’ director Valerie Lombardi, the current RN program is offered through Bakersfield College. This grant, which started June 1 and will continue through June 20, 2010 and totals $1,000,000, will allow PC to create its own program locally. Tentatively, PC has scheduled that program to start fall semester of 2010.
Lombardi, who will be the project manager for the new RN program, says at this stage, PC still needs to apply for the new major through the Chancellor’s office, write a feasibility study, and create the program’s curriculum, policies and its application procedures.
These will all need to be submitted to the college and to the Board of Registered Nursing for approval before the program can begin. The grant money will also go toward the purchase of a new portable building and the development of a state-of-the-art skills lab.
According to PC president Rosa Carlson, the grant benefits the community as well as the campus.
“Our PC nursing program has been very strong and productive for a long time, and this grant will better enable us train and produce much needed nurses for our area. It is another example of how we at Porterville College are working to reach out to our community with modern facilities. I am excited to receive this grant," Carlson said.
